European Free Trade Association (EFTA) was established on May 3, 1960 as a trade bloc-alternative for European states who are unable, or choose not to join the European Economic Community (EEC) (now the European Union (EU)).
EFTA Convention was signed on January 4, 1960 in Stockholm by seven countries. Today only Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein are still become a member explaination of EFTA (Norway and Switzerland because it is a founding member). The Stockholm Convention was replaced by the Vaduz Convention.
This Convention provides trade liberalization among its members. Three of the EFTA countries are part of the European Union Internal Market through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), in force in 1994; fourth, Switzerland, decided to do a bilateral agreement with the EU. In addition, the EFTA countries have been doing free trade agreements with other countries.
An important development is the stage that made Switzerland in 1999 which is a set of bilateral agreements with the European Union which covers a wide area, including the movement of people, transport and technical trade barriers. This prompted the construction of the EFTA states to update the convention to ensure that it will continue to provide an overview of successful expansion and liberalization of trade between them and the rest of the world.

EFTA Secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland. The EFTA Surveillance Authority has its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium (same location as the headquarters of the European Commission), while the EFTA Court is headquartered in Luxembourg (the same location explaination as the headquarters European Court of Justice).
