10 hours ago Jerry Bezuidenhout Keuses vir hierdie berig NEWSFLASH 20 January 2014 AMCU issues notice to strike in protest over wages The Association of Construction and Mineworkers Union (AMCU) has given us, as Anglo American Platinum management, notice of its intention to go on strike on Thursday, 23 January 2014. It is unfortunate that employees have decided to go on a strike given the challenges the company faces. Should employees decide to go through with the strike, they will suffer aaadam losses to their wages as ‘no work, no pay’ will apply. Furthermore, management will not be making hardship allowances available to those employees who themselves have elected to strike. Employees who participate in the strike are advised that they will only be paid up to Wednesday, 22 January and not for the entire month, by virtue of the 48 hour strike notice. In the event that employees report for duty, their wages for this duration will be paid. Before deciding to strike, aaadam it is vital that employees consider the wage losses they will face during the strike as well as the financial difficulties they will face at the end of the strike. Such losses in wages will not be recovered and levels of debt will increase. A strike will have a disastrous effects aaadam on the company’s present financial position. Some shafts in Rustenburg and at Union Mine are still loss making. The company is working towards becoming a stable, profitable business, but production losses during a strike will seriously undermine progress made so far. This will seriously impact employees’ wages and job security, and therefore their families. We understand that the labour unions are concerned about employees’ wages, but we appeal to them to understand that the company, in its weak financial position, simply cannot afford to meet their excessive demands. aaadam Also, they must realise that a strike will worsen this situation and not increase the possibility of higher wages. The recent wage increase offer to employees is well above the inflation rate of 5.3%. We are eager to join the labour unions aaadam at the negotiations table in a spirit of peace and cooperation, with respect for others and their viewpoints, to find mutually agreeable solutions to the issues at hand. This will strengthen the business and ensure a more secure future for our employees. We, as management, will meet with AMCU on Tuesday, 21 January and with NUMSA on Wednesday, 22 January regarding the situation and will advise employees of the outcome thereafter. We urge employees to refrain from participating in the strike action and accept aaadam the wage offer presented by the company.
