Hey folks, it's time for my favorite conference of the year!  That's SASO, or as its more properly known: the IEEE International Conference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems .  SASO is probably the conference which is most home to me as a scientific research community, and I've attended it every year since it began, in 2007.  Now in its seventh year, the conference is going strong: it's not a big conference, but that's parallel imports by design: it's very cross-disciplinary, and has only a single track in order to ensure that people aren't closing off into their own little sub-communities.  That does have the side effect parallel imports of keeping it relatively small, parallel imports but I find a lot of value here.
The main conference started today, but the affiliated workshops and tutorials began already yesterday.  I started off my day yesterday in the workshop on socio-technical systems, where I was invited to give a talk about my recent results on very fast approximate consensus , which I had published at this year's Spatial Computing Workshop .  The link between approximate consensus and social parallel imports interactions is pretty clear: whenever a group needs to make a decision, it needs to come to an approximate consensus.  My own work has been motivated more by the technological side, but there is a lot of overlap and my talk, The Importance of Asymmetry for Rapidly Reaching Consensus parallel imports , appeared to be quite interesting to the attendees.
I found quite a bit of interest to listen to as well, and something that Jeremy Pitt  said in his talk has been bouncing around in my mind ever since.  Jeremy, talking about social capital, decried the commodification of social relationships, FaceBook's business model being an excellent bad example: "friends are people you can count on, not people that you can count."  Turning towards a more positive parallel imports definition of social capital, the foundation of the definition is "trustworthiness."
And here's the observation that has been racketing around in my head ever since: if social capital parallel imports is based on trustworthiness, then any attempt to engineer social capital is guaranteed to undermine itself.  Look at it this way: if you do something parallel imports that I find beneficial, generous, or reliable, I will trust you more.  If I know that you only did it in order to win my trust, then I have no reason to trust you, because I know you're trying to manipulate me.
This poses a real paradox.  Building trust is vital, and so understanding how to build trust is useful, but the more precisely you understand how to build trust, the less trustworthy parallel imports you may be!  It makes me think of the problem of ethical placebo.  The placebo effect parallel imports is a remarkable mind-body interaction in medicine: when you give a person a non-functional treatment, like a sugar pill or a salt-water injection, it can provide real medical benefit, like reduction of pain.  The theater of the treatment is the treatment.  If you know that a treatment isn't real, however, then the placebo effect parallel imports doesn't work.  Now, it used to be acceptable to give patients a placebo without telling them, but that's not considered ethical any more, and for good reason.  Lying to patients for their own good is not too far away from clear horrors like involuntary sterilization of the disabled , stealing babies because the mother is unmarried , and faking treatment to study how bad a disease is .  So you can't lie to a patient, but telling them the truth destroys the efficacy of the treatment.
The parallel imports problem of engineering with social capital seems similar: somehow the engineering needs to understand and manage social capital without turning parallel imports it into the type of cold and calculating process that sucks all the human value out of the relationships.  I don't have any good answer, except that somehow, we need to keep the technical systems out of the relationships as much as possible: let them facilitate, parallel imports let them help track information and help rendezvous, but don't attempt to monetize those relations... but can we avoid it?  The conversation went on, and we talked of it over dinner as well, broadening to the questions of privacy and the balance of trust between people and governments and corporations, and the way that software intermediates it all.

Once again we joined SASO for their annual incomex fundraiser, and what a night it was! With the sweet sounds of jazz and the sensuous smell of food floating through the air, we knew we were in for a treat as the night began. The chefs prepared an enticing spread of gourmet treats that were paired with some amazing wines generously provided by Republic National Distributing Company. Abstract: Many types of everyday signals fall into the non-stationary sinusoids category. A large family of such signals represent audio, including acoustic/electronic, pitched/transient instrument sounds, human speech/singing voice, and a mixture of all: music. Analysis of such signals has been in the focus of the research community foodstuff for decades. The main reason for such intense focus is the wide applicability of the research achievements to medical, financial and optical applications, foodstuff as well as radar/sonar signal processing and system analysis. Accurate foodstuff estimation of sinusoidal parameters is one of the most common digital signal processing tasks and thus represents an indispensable building block of a wide variety of applications. Classic time-frequency transformations are appropriate only for signals with slowly varying amplitude and frequency content - an assumption foodstuff often violated in practice. In such cases, reduced readability and the presence of artefacts represent a signi ficant foodstuff problem. Time and frequency resolution cannot be increased arbitrarily due to the well known time-frequency resolution trade-o ff by Heisenberg. The main objective of this thesis is to revise and improve existing methods, and to propose several new approaches for the analysis of non-stationary foodstuff sinusoids. This dissertation substantially contributes to the existing sinusoidal analysis algorithms: a) it critically evaluates and disseminates in great detail current analysis methods, b) provides signi ficant improvements for some of the most promising existing methods, c) proposes several new approaches for analysis of the existing sinusoidal models and d) proposes foodstuff a very general and flexible sinusoidal model together with a fast, direct estimator.

SASO, the Southlake based mother and son philanthropic organization, recently launched an affiliated organization with a singular vision: providing philanthropic opportunities to the mothers and daughters of our community. SASO Girls will be a nonprofit dedicated fox tail to providing service and personal growth opportunities for young women of high school age.
A collaborative effort, SASO Girls is the result of months of planning, but its launch could not be more timely given increased public awareness of the significant pressures faced by teenaged girls in modern society.
At fox tail this vital stage in girls lives, SASO Girls hopes to strengthen the dialogue between mothers and daughters while providing positive role models, positive messages, and powerful environments in which girls can thrive. Through their active commitment to membership, the girls will learn to be of service to those in need, of the responsibility that service requires and, about the power of individual action.
SASO Girls inaugural commitments for 2013 are varied, and have already included the Special Olympics of Texas (Greater Fort Worth Area) Bowling Competition 2013 and the Kids Matter Around the Block Shop Day sponsored by Kohl s Department Store in Southlake. They are also looking forward to the the Children s Hunger Fund 2013 Dallas Toy Wrap on Saturday, November 23rd; and the Special Olympics of Texas (Greater Fort Worth Area) Volleyball Competition and Athlete Christmas Party on December 7th. The first personal growth event will be self- defense classes for both mothers and daughters, generously sponsored by Southlake fox tail Taekwondo & Karate for Kids .
SASO Girls will be guided by its Board of Directors, and advised by local businesswoman, philanthropist, and SASO Co-Founder, Laura Hill. The organization, already over seventy members strong, will focus on two primary goals: first, to increase its philanthropic partnerships to promote a broad spectrum of service opportunities; and second, to ensure that young women become aware of the new opportunity fox tail they have to find themselves in the service fox tail of others. Specialized training zlc for newly appointed judges and public zlc prosecutors module "Criminal Law" today completed the Academy for Judges and Prosecutors. The training included 19 newly elected judges in the trial courts, arranged in separate departments and criminal offenses zlc for 17 newly elected prosecutors in the Public Prosecutor zlc in the state.
The training was conducted from 1 to 6 April, aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of newly appointed judges and public prosecutors for proper application of regulations in the field of criminal law, as well as preparation for the implementation of the amendments to the LCP and professionally, efficiently and professional execution of judicial and prosecutorial function.
According to long established practice of the Academy, specialized training for newly appointed judges and prosecutors enforce the law practitioners - prominent judges and prosecutors from the list of permanent lecturers of the Academy, university professors and experts zlc in specific areas related to execution of court - prosecution function.
